2014 07 12 Guru Purnima

This year for Guru Purnima, I chose songs and satsangs for the three gurus whose ashrams I visited in 2012, Haidakhan Babaji, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Sathya Sai Baba. EnJOY!

Guru Purnima
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_Purnima
(IAST: Guru Pūrṇimā, sanskrit: गुरु पूर्णिमा) is a Hindu festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers. This festival traditionally celebrated by Hindus and Buddhists, to thank their teachers. It is marked by ritualistic respect to the Guru, Guru Puja. The Guru Principle is a thousand times more active on the day of Gurupournima than on any other day. The word Guru is derived from two words, 'Gu' and 'Ru'. The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. Gurus are believed by many to be the most necessary part of lives. On this day, disciples offer puja (worship) or pay respect to their Guru (Spiritual Guide). It falls on the day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh (June-July) of the Shaka Samvat, Indian national calendar and Hindu calendar.

"The Yogis you will see in this film took unprecedented risks. Once vowed to extreme secrecy to maintain the purity of their practices, they agreed to these unique interviews and rare demonstrations to help preserve for posterity their vanishing culture.

2014 05 02 Satsang Fr Richard Rohr, Christian Mystical Tradition

If nothing else, I am eclectic in my beliefs, and along with Daoism and Vedic tradtions, I very much enJOY the daily inspirational messages sent by the Center for Action and Contemplation.

There is a tradition that says Jesus visited India for a period of time, and I would not be a bit surprised since the non-dualist teachings of the Christian mystical tradition are so closely compatible. Having been on pilgrimage in India for 74 days, and having spoken to many Indians as well as Westerners while I was there, as well as having had mystical experiences of my own, I can whole-heartedly say that the non-dualist teachings of Fr. Rohr fit perfectly with the Vedic teachings one finds in India. I also follow and teach A Course In Miracles which offers no conflict with these experiences as well. Divine harmony at its finest!

Every true Yogi is a Mystic. It is the only way to experience Oneness.

1 - Gayatri Mantra 9:04

2 - Fr. Richard Rohr: The Paradox of Truth - an Aspect of Christian Mysticism 42:48
Published on Feb 23, 2014
Paradox is at the heart of reality, says Franciscan Priest Fr Richard Rohr, but we're just too wedded to our egos and dualism to embrace it.

In this Interview Fr. Richard Rohr talks about his latest book The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See, which offers an understanding of the Christian mystic tradition as a nondualistic way of seeing the moment. This is what Fr. Rohr says is the most important book that he has written to date.

Fr. Rohr is a Franciscan priest, founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, and the author of Everything Belongs and Things Hidden. Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) https://cac.org/richard-rohr

2014 01 24 Vehicle to Enlightenment - the Gayatri Mantra

This is the third mantra that I believe has extraordinary powers of transformation. The first two were Immortality - the Asatoma Sadgamaya mantra  and Only Wholeness Is - the Om Purnam mantra

Entire books have been written about the Gayatri Mantra, so I won't try to repeat or condense them here. All I will say is that this is truly one of the most powerful mantras on the planet and that I do believe, and can speak from experience, that the combination of sounds while singing this mantra cause vibrations that lead to extraordinary experiences that may include Wholeness (Oneness) and Immortality. Try it and see for yourself.

This is interesting, an introduction to how and why this mantra may produce the effects it can in the human experience.

Science Of Gayathri Mantra [Must] 9:58

The excerpt below serves as an introduction to the translated meaning of the Gayatri Mantra. Please do follow the link and read the entire article, it's quite excellent.

My Pilgrimage to Gayatri Mantra by Dr. Manohar Abhay

"Meaning With the Use of Pre-Fix

"With the pre-fix of four words, the mantra is comprised of four parts (1) Aum, Bhur Bhuvah, Suvah,(2) Tat Savitur Veranyam,(3) Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi, (4) Dheeyo Yo Nah Prachodayat. By chanting the first part, one contemplates, to invoke certain powers, on the glory of the light that illumines the three worlds namely; earth, atmosphere and space or the gross, subtle and casual or the three realms of waking, dreaming, and sleep or the three part s of the body (from feet to navel, navel to throat, throat to mind). This prepares the ground for effective functioning of the second, third and the fourth part o f the mantra. This is also an invocation to pay reverence to the planes of our existence (the planes of our ordinary life- the physical, astral and mental) and to invite their presiding deities to support and help us. These three parts are in praise of the glory, the splendour that flows from the light. It is an invocation to Savitur (the centre of light) for granting more light. Indirectly, it is the Supreme-Conscious- Being within the cosmic sun or light of lights, the creator of all forces, which is praised here.

"Taking together all the four important parts of the mantra, its meaning reads as follows:
We meditate (dheemahi) on the spiritual effulgence or glory (bhargo) of that adorable supreme divine reality (varenyam devasya), the source or projector (savitur) of the three phenomenal realms of the gross (bhur), the subtle or the psychical (bhuvah) and the potential or casual(svah). May that(tat)Supreme-Divine-Being stimulate (prachdayat) our (na) intellect (dheeo)."

The lyric to the mantra:

Aum Bhur Bhuva Svaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi
Dheeyo Yo Na Prachodayat

2013 12 08 Gayatri Mantras for Meditation and Illumination

Gayatri Mantras for Meditation and Illumination: Sun, Ganesha, Brahma, Saraswati, Vishnu, L:akshmi, Shiva, Durga, Kali, Krishna, Radha, Ram, Sita, and Hanuman.

(Check out 10 Reasons to chant...the benefits of mantra meditation.)

Below you'll find information on the Gayatri Mantras as well as lyrics and translations.

Today's playlist includes 14 videos that play for 59 minutes.

Gayatri Mantra
http://www.sanskrit.org/www/Hindu%20Primer/gayatri.html

"Om bhur bhuvah svah
"tat-savitur varenyam
"bhargo devasya dhimahi
"dhiyo yo nah pracodayat

"Gayatri is actually the name for a Sanskrit poetical meter that contains three lines of eight syllables each. There are, therefore, many gayatri mantras, but this particular one is the oldest and most well known of all gayatri mantras. In Hinduism all Gods and Goddesses have a gayatri mantra associated with them. There is a gayatri for Ganesha, one for Shiva, one for Durga, one for Vishnu, one for Lakshmi, and so on. Most people are unaware of this fact and when Hindus talk about the gayatri mantra they mean thee gayatri mantra shown above, which is addressed to Savitri, the sun. The first line: om bhur bhuvah svah that you see above is not actually part of a gayatri mantra. It is a special utterance called vyahriti that has been added to the beginning of this famous gayatri .

"The Great Utterance

"The first part of the gayatri mantra, om bhur bhuvah svah, which we mentioned at the beginning as not part of the mantra, is called vyahriti or the "great utterance." This mantra is repeated not only in conjunction with the gayatri mantra, but also separately during havans or fire ceremonies. The word om is a auspicious sound made at the beginning of many prayers. The expression bhur bhuvah and svah is technical, but a simple way to think of it is as a “call to creation,” that the light of the sun (the light of God) shines on the earth (bhur), in the sky (bhuvah), and in space (svah), and therefore the implication is, "let that light also shine on me."

"The technical explanation vyahriti has to do with subtle practices of meditational yoga. This earth is simply one of many planes of existence. In fact, above this earth are six higher planes, heavens as it were. Including this earth, there are seven planes up (heavens) and seven planes down, or hells below this earth. The earth is in the middle. If you have ever heard the expression, “he is in seventh heaven” you should understand that this is a reference to the Hindu idea of heavens. The seventh heaven is the highest heaven. The first three of these planes starting with the earth are called bhur, bhuvah and svah. The utterance bhur bhuvah svah, therefore, refers to the first three subtle planes of existence that may be reached in meditation by a yogi."

2011 12 25 Anthony de Mello Tribute 2

On October 26, 2011 I posted a tribute to Tony, the first ten parts of the Awareness series. You may view that here: 2011 10 26 Anthony de Mello Tribute

Today I close the year with the final five parts of the series. I watched these just a couple of evenings ago, on Christmas Eve, 2011!  The first segment, especially, is very powerful. It seems like both an invitation and a challenge to Awareness, Awakening, Enlightenment. This seems most appropriate as we enter 2012. Are you ready? :-)

These seven videos play for approximately 60 minutes.

Anthony DeMello
http://www.demello.org/

Until his sudden death on June 2, 1987, Fr. Tony de Mello was the director of the Sadhana Institute of Pastoral Counseling near Poona, India. Author of five best selling books, renowned worldwide for his workshops, retreats, and prayer courses, he aimed simply to teach people
how to pray, how to wake up and live.

Most people, he maintained, are asleep. They need to wake up, open up their eyes, see what is real, both inside and outside of themselves. The greatest human gift is to be aware, to be in touch with oneself, one's body, mind, feelings, thoughts, sensations.

2011 12 13 Satsang Jiddu Krishnamurti

Today's Satsang is approximately 70 minutes long and has one main component, a talk given by Jiddu Krishnamurti: "7th Public Talk, Saanen, Switzerland, 22nd July, 1979"

In Total Silence the Mind Comes Upon the Eternal

[Some of the topics addressed in this talk]
Why is there constant strife and seeking?
Are we seeking superficial sensory experience or something timeless that thought has not touched at all?
Can thought with its limitation enquire deeply? Is observation the instrument of thought?
When one observes does the thing being observed undergo change?
Can the mind having understood desire know its value is relative and be free to observe?
Is there a way of living without any control? Is not the controller the movement of thought?
When there is no conflict whatsoever what takes place in the mind?

2 - Jiddu Krishnamurti: In Total Silence The Mind Comes Upon The Eternal  1:08

Today's Satsang is with Mooji. It includes two wonderful programs and plays for approximately 65 minutes.

From  http://www.mooji.org/biography.html
Anthony Paul Moo-Young, known as Mooji, was born on 29 January 1954 in Port Antonio, Jamaica. In 1969, he moved to the UK and he is presently living in Brixton, London.

Mooji is a direct disciple of Sri Harilal Poonja, the renowned advaita master, or Papaji, as his followers call him.

In late November 1993, Mooji travelled to Indira Nagar in Lucknow to meet Papaji. It was to be an auspicious and profoundly significant experience on his spiritual journey. He felt it to be his good fortune; he had met a living Buddha, a fully enlightened master. He gradually came to recognise that Papaji was his Guru. Mooji stayed with Papaji for several months.

Gangaji (born Texas, 1942) is an American born spiritual teacher and author.

In the biography of her life, Just Like You, she said, “The extraordinary event in this life was that I met Papaji. Until then I looked everywhere for the transcendental or the extraordinary, but after meeting Papaji I began to find the extraordinary in every moment.” Papaji gave her the name Gangaji, and asked her to share what she had directly realized with others.
