2019 02 19 Popular and Useful Bija Mantras

Here are eight of the most popular, useful, and commonly used bija mantras to change and improve your life. (Bija or Beeja means Seed or Essence, one syllable that represents the essence of the deity.) There is a bija mantra for Shiva, but Om Namah Shivaya is used far more than any other and so I stayed with that tradition.

Eight videos play for 79 minutes

1 - Ganesh – opens doors to new beginnings and leads you around obstacles. Call upon him when you begin something new, and for intelligence.
Ganesh means Gana (group, multitude) Isha (Lord/Master) Overseer of the demi-gods who followed his father Shiva.
Om gum ganapathaye namah - Deva Premal - 8:13

2 - Kali – a fierce fighter yet loving mother figure; destroyer of evil; protection
Kali means 'fulness of time' or 'force of time'
Om Kreem Kalikaye namah - no artist info - 7:48

3 - Krishna – spiritual or unconditional love. If you need to love yourself, or are trying to forgive someone, this could be useful.
Krishna means black; dark-colored
Om kleem krishnaya namaha - no artist info - 13:16

4 - Lakshmi – fortune and wealth
Lakshmi means 'kindred mark' or 'sign of auspicious fortune'
Om shreem Mahalakshmiaya namaha - Deva Premal - 7:55

5 - Saraswati – creativity and learning [education], music and arts
Saraswati means 'She of the stream'
Om sum saraswathaye namah - Sahil Jagtiani - 12:47

6 - Shiva – destroyer of illusion; when you need a breakthrough or clarity
Shiva means 'the Auspicious, the Perfect'
Om namah shivaya - no artist info -11:55

7 - Surya - The Sun, an excellent mantra to demonstrate Gratitude.
Surya is the name for the sun, ghrin means 'favor'
Om ghrin suryaya namah - SBV Music - 11:42

8 - Vishnu – peace, love, protector of the universe
Vishnu means 'all-pervading' or 'the being who supports all things'
This one is done as a kirtan (call and response) so I am not sure there are 108 repetitions, but I loved this version. You'll notice he includes Krishna in this one, too
Om namo narayanaya - Sahil Jagtiani - 5:18

2014 04 05 Vasanta Navratri

Vasanta Navratri, March 31 through April 8, 2014, is the Spring celebration of  Nine Nights of the Divine Mothers honoring Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali/Durga. Playlist includes a special puja at the Kali Temple in Kalimath, followed by beeja mantras, gayatri mantras, and chalisas for Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali/Durga.

It was while creating this Navratri playlist in spring of 2012 I was inspired by a photo of Kalimath to be there for the fall Navratri that same year. That and more may be read about in my book: Pilgrimage to India: An American Woman's Adventure.

My inspiration: Kali Math www.vedic-yagya.biz-pages-Vasant2011.htm

I was there for fall Navratri in October of that year.  The man in the white pants and scarf with the tan sweater/jacket is Pandit Sanjay Bhatt, Pujari Sidhpeeth (The Priest of Kalimath). I enJOYed several aaratis with him while I was there. The cloaked statue of Kali is in the center altar (looks caged).

2013 12 08 Gayatri Mantras for Meditation and Illumination

Gayatri Mantras for Meditation and Illumination: Sun, Ganesha, Brahma, Saraswati, Vishnu, L:akshmi, Shiva, Durga, Kali, Krishna, Radha, Ram, Sita, and Hanuman.

(Check out 10 Reasons to chant...the benefits of mantra meditation.)

Below you'll find information on the Gayatri Mantras as well as lyrics and translations.

Today's playlist includes 14 videos that play for 59 minutes.

Gayatri Mantra
http://www.sanskrit.org/www/Hindu%20Primer/gayatri.html

"Om bhur bhuvah svah
"tat-savitur varenyam
"bhargo devasya dhimahi
"dhiyo yo nah pracodayat

"Gayatri is actually the name for a Sanskrit poetical meter that contains three lines of eight syllables each. There are, therefore, many gayatri mantras, but this particular one is the oldest and most well known of all gayatri mantras. In Hinduism all Gods and Goddesses have a gayatri mantra associated with them. There is a gayatri for Ganesha, one for Shiva, one for Durga, one for Vishnu, one for Lakshmi, and so on. Most people are unaware of this fact and when Hindus talk about the gayatri mantra they mean thee gayatri mantra shown above, which is addressed to Savitri, the sun. The first line: om bhur bhuvah svah that you see above is not actually part of a gayatri mantra. It is a special utterance called vyahriti that has been added to the beginning of this famous gayatri .

"The Great Utterance

"The first part of the gayatri mantra, om bhur bhuvah svah, which we mentioned at the beginning as not part of the mantra, is called vyahriti or the "great utterance." This mantra is repeated not only in conjunction with the gayatri mantra, but also separately during havans or fire ceremonies. The word om is a auspicious sound made at the beginning of many prayers. The expression bhur bhuvah and svah is technical, but a simple way to think of it is as a “call to creation,” that the light of the sun (the light of God) shines on the earth (bhur), in the sky (bhuvah), and in space (svah), and therefore the implication is, "let that light also shine on me."

"The technical explanation vyahriti has to do with subtle practices of meditational yoga. This earth is simply one of many planes of existence. In fact, above this earth are six higher planes, heavens as it were. Including this earth, there are seven planes up (heavens) and seven planes down, or hells below this earth. The earth is in the middle. If you have ever heard the expression, “he is in seventh heaven” you should understand that this is a reference to the Hindu idea of heavens. The seventh heaven is the highest heaven. The first three of these planes starting with the earth are called bhur, bhuvah and svah. The utterance bhur bhuvah svah, therefore, refers to the first three subtle planes of existence that may be reached in meditation by a yogi."
